Waterloo SA is collaborating with Container Conversions (Pty) Ltd to provide flush toilets in container units anywhere they may be needed. Schools are obviously a number one priority when it comes to providing sanitation and toilets, but Waterloo toilet containers are also ideal for:
- Construction sites, now making flush toilets compulsory
- Mines
- Farms
- Communities
- Clinics
- Taxi ranks
- and Festivals.
What’s impressive about these toilet containers is their flexibility and installation options. The flush toilet containers can be used anywhere where sanitation is an issue. Featuring an enclosed water cycle, they are an ideal application where water is scarce, and a sewer system is not present or functioning. They’re basically a septic tank, treatment plant & holding tank all in one and no additional infrastructure, on site water or sewer is needed.
Made-to-order solutions depend on site conditions and can include solar options where no power is available, or handwash basins where water is available. Waterloo SA Flush Toilet Containers offer an instant solution to sanitation requirements and full off-grid and mobile options are offered. All units are available for rental or purchase.
Ideal option for CSI initiatives
Schools, in particular, are in dire need when it comes to sanitation and toilet facilities. In 2023 the Department of Basic Education identified 3398 schools that still had pit latrines! 1 And this figure, of course, does not include schools that do not have enough toilets for the number of learners in the school, nor those that have old, outdated and non-working toilets.
Replacing pit latrines is a priority. They are dangerous, as evidenced by media reports of small children falling in and drowning, unsanitary and usually not well maintained or emptied. The risk of groundwater contamination as well as river surface contamination is a problem, in that there appear to be no official guidelines for schools on emptying pit latrines. Poorly maintained and aged pit latrines also pose a risk of outbreaks of diarrhoeal or sanitation-related disease.
Many of the schools utilising pit latrines are in inconvenient and remote areas with very little access to basic infrastructure such as running water or electricity. These toilet containers also offer a solar option, with the solar panels mounted with anti-theft mechanisms. A 6 500-litre capacity recycled water tank comes standard with all container toilets, as does a bio-reactor and disinfection tank, which is housed adjacent to the 8 stalls. A Waterloo SA Flush Toilet Container is a completely self-sustainable and fully functional sanitation solution for schools, and any other corporate social initiatives aimed at providing health and hygiene options to communities.
An example of a current project where the toilet containers made a difference is the St Lewis Bertrand’s Secondary School – a high performing academic and culturally significant school in Blaauwbosch, Newcastle KZN. Due to high demand, the school has attracted more learners than its infrastructure can reasonably accommodate. There are only 12 toilets for 1600 learners. The result has meant the sewage and toilet infrastructure has broken down into the school grounds, causing unsanitary conditions for the learners and teachers alike. In October 2023, Waterloo SA provided a further 8 toilets in its innovative flush toilet containers. This formed part of NACOSA’s Imagine project, which aims to improve the health of young women in South Africa.
In short, safe to use flush toilets make a big difference to the everyday lives of school children, disadvantaged communities, the workforce and clinic patients. Part of our collaboration is to teach the importance of conserving resources, whilst restoring dignity. Definitely a CSI initiative worth considering.
