An impressive project recently completed by Container Conversions is this industrial site in the KwaZulu-Natal region. The structure showcases the versatility and efficacy of building with containers for industrial site applications. The entire project, from start to finish, took four weeks to complete.
Client stipulations were that the units needed to take up as little space as possible, whilst ensuring the structure maintained the look, feel and colour of the main existing building on site.
Due to the limited site space available, the best solution was a double storey structure. Four 12m (40ft) B Grade pre-owned shipping containers were used, with one container placed on top of the other on each side in order to maximise space usage and minimise the building footprint. A lightweight steel truss roof then covered the containers and the space between them, resulting in a covered area for maintenance vehicles, maintenance work and a safe area for tools and equipment.
Total square metres of floor space utilised, including the external roof was 286 square metres. The units comprised the following:
- A male ablution block (4 toilets, 4 showers, 3 urinals, 2 hand wash basins & changing area);
- a female ablution (2 toilets, 2 showers, 2 hand wash basins & changing area) in one half, and a canteen (1 double bowl sink, including mixer tap, cupboards & countertop) in the other half;
- a workshop with storage space (including fire rated electrics & fire door);
- and an office & workshop.
Access to the second-floor units is by way of external steel staircases and landings.
